Things to see and do
This beautiful city is situated on the banks of the largest lake in Central Europe, at the foot of the Jura Mountains and at the gates of the Alps. Its beauty, charm and privileged location, makes Geneva a popular destination all year round, but particularly in winter as it is only a stones throw from some fantastic skiing.
The city centre hugs the shore of the world famous lake and this is a popular spot to start your sight seeing. The Jet d’Eau in the middle of the lake is a 140 meters high water monument. From the fountain, water shoots up at 200kmh (124mh) to create a 140m (460ft) plume - the world's tallest. At any one time, seven tonnes of water hangs in the air. Founded in 1864, the International Red Cross became the world's first humanitarian organisation. Its museum in Geneva highlights the fascinating origins and growth of the Red Cross (and the Muslim addition, the Red Crescent), and presents a compelling multimedia search through atrocities perpetuated by humanity in recent history. The gorgeous Musée Ariana is one of Europe's most important and comprehensive kilncraft museums - and it's a freebie.
The United Nations is only a short hop east of the museum (you'll need to bring your passport to get inside). Here you can take an hour-long tour among the 3000-odd international civil servants working there, but you're not likely to see any delicate negotiations taking place. Geneva is home to a total of 30 museums including the Museum of Art and History, the Natural History Museum, and the Botanical Conservatory and Garden. The centre of the Old Town is dominated by the imposing, partially Roman, partially Gothic Cathédral de St Pierre. John Calvin preached the Protestant way here, from 1536 to 1564, and his seat remains in the north aisle. If you follow the coast road that goes from the town centre along the left bank of Lake Léman you arrive at Hermance; a picturesque village with cottages dating from the 15th century. After a quiet walk through the village and a stop at one of the charming café/restaurants, the beach there is also worth a visit.
With ChansCars.com it is simpler than ever to get the opportunity to spend a few days in this fantastic city.
